Blue light scatters in all directions across the whole sky โ that's why it looks blue overhead!
Why is the Sky Blue?
Sunlight looks white, but it's really made of every color mixed together โ red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. We call this the visible spectrum, and you can see it split apart in a rainbow!
โก Fun Fact:Earth is wrapped in a thin layer of air called the atmosphere. When sunlight hits the tiny gas molecules in the atmosphere, it bounces off in all directions โ this bouncing is called scattering!
Blue light has short, small waves, so it bumps into air molecules more often and scatters much more than red or yellow light. All that scattered blue light bounces around the whole sky, so wherever you look up, you see blue!
๐ Example:At sunrise and sunset, sunlight has to travel through way more atmosphere to reach your eyes. Almost all the blue gets scattered away before it arrives, leaving mostly red, orange, and pink light โ that's why sunsets glow warm colors!
๐ก Tip:High up in the mountains or in space, there's much less atmosphere to scatter light, so the sky looks darker โ almost black, like at night, even during the day!
