A fraction shows a part of a whole. If you cut a pizza into equal slices, each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza!

The two parts of a fraction:

  • โ€ขNumerator โ€” the top number. It tells you how many parts you have.
  • โ€ขDenominator โ€” the bottom number. It tells you how many equal parts the whole was cut into.

๐Ÿ“ Example:1/2 means 1 out of 2 equal parts (a half). 1/4 means 1 out of 4 equal parts (a quarter). 2/4 means 2 out of 4 equal parts.

โšก Fun Fact:1/2 is bigger than 1/4, even though 2 is a smaller number than 4! That's because when a pizza is cut into only 2 slices, each slice is much bigger than when it's cut into 4 slices.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip:A bigger denominator means the whole is cut into more (and smaller) pieces โ€” the opposite of what you might expect!
